Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
